Project:    Light Water Packaging System PLC Retrofit

Client:    3M Specialty Materials Division – Decatur, AL

Project description:

An Omron C120 PLC was previously used to control a packaging line for 3M’s Light Water Product. Upon failure of the obsolete C120 model PLC, it was necessary to do a fast-track retrofit to get the line back into operation. The existing C120 PLC was removed from the panel. The new CQM1 series PLC was installed and existing wiring re-used. The line was then started up and proven to operate as before with the new control system. This retrofit was accomplished in less than three working days.

C&E Design Services scope:

• Demolition of existing C120 series PLC equipment
• Installation of new CQM1 series PLC equipment
• Re-mapping of existing C120 I/O addressing to new CQM1 I/O
• Conversion of C120 PLC ladder logic to CQM1 format
• Documentation of revised I/O assignments and new ladder logic program
• On-site startup and debugging of new control system
